SMILE laser eye surgery is performed using a VisuMax femtosecond laser. This Laser helps to  create a small, lens-shaped bit of tissue (lenticule) within the cornea. An arc-shaped incision is done on the surface of the cornea, by which the surgeon extracts the lenticule. Removing the tiny lenticule, the shape of the cornea is altered, to correct the nearsightedness. As the procedure is without stitches healing happens within a few days. Sharper vision occurs very quickly with Smile procedure correcting the nearsightedness, without the need to create a corneal flap. Only a very small opening is needed (often less than 4 mm) to facilitate removal of the lenticule, it can correct up to -10.00 diopters (D) of nearsightedness. A person must be at least 22 years old, have no more than -0.50 D of astigmatism, and their eyeglass prescription must be stable for at least 12 months. SMILE takes place within the cornea without a large corneal flap. Fewer corneal nerves are affected by the procedure, hence the dry eye symptoms are less. The very small incision may enable the cornea to have more biomechanical stability and helps to maintain shape with correction of high amounts of nearsightedness, In SMILE, there is no need for additional procedure for correction of high amounts of myopia, because less dehydration of the cornea occurs during the procedure. SMILE might increase (HOA) higher-order aberrations to some degree.
