Mr. Ananth Kumar (Minister of chemicals and fertilizers) was speaking at the inaugural of the 9th Medical Technology Conference organized , the medical technology manufacturers meeting would be held with ministers of health, environment and forest and finance to rectify the problems relating to banning imports of refurbished medical devices with extended warranty in the following days. According to CDSCO, for marketing of imported medical devices in India requires medical device Registration Certificate in Form-41 and Import License in Form-10  under the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules.

A recent government notification had banned the import of medical technologies more than 3 years old, causing widespread concern among the industry. Total production of medical equipment during the last two and half years has crossed US$ 2 billion. He also said that “People in Asia and Africa regions look forward to affordable and easily accessible medical devices to cater to their demanding health needs, which can be supplied from India,”

Mr. Ananth Kumar said that introduction of Goods and Services Tax (GST) could bring down the prices of medical equipment by 12 %. He recommends the industry to take an agreement approach on the regulatory mechanism needed for the sector and to create a mission mode approach to develop the medical devices segment. He also said that medical devices parks coming up in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh would be game changers and wanted other states to follow that model.

Chairman of CII Medical Technology Division Himanshu Baid mentioned that, the Government is taking several steps to promote the medical devices sector in the country.  However, there are concerns such as delay in setting up the regulatory body for medical devices, unwarranted regulations, like plastic bags ban in blood banks etc. which should be resolved.
