The union health ministry is soon making it mandatory for the physicians to prescribe drugs on their generic names to promote the usage of generic drugs in the country. The ministry took this decision after consulting with Medical Council of India (MCI) and the Indian Medical Association (IMA). The issue has been in for a while now, and a clause is inserted in the Indian Medical Council 2002, which read “Every physician should ensure the rational use of drugs and prescribe with their generic names”. In 2013, all medical colleges, presidents of the councils, directors of PG institutes received circulars from the MCI to ensure compliance by doctors to the clause 1.5 of the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002.
