The Union Health Ministry in association with Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) is working with key global pharmaceuticals standard setting bodies for further strengthening of Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP). This move will certainly place IP as globally accepted standards and will also give more opportunities to the manufacturers.
Dr H G Koshia, commissioner of Gujarat FDCA said, “IP have largest number of monographs, stricter norms and have some stronger standards than top pharmacopoeias placing IP among the top few of the 39 recognised pharmacopoeia standards(globally).” The decision to harmonise Indian Pharmacopoeia was taken in iPHEX held recently at Mumbai. “Currently the manufactures have to comply with global standards for exporting and follow IP standards for the Indian market. Once IP is harmonized with global standards, that would make the manufacturers comply with one command for global and Indian market. India has all the capabilities to manufacture high standard drugs at affordable prices” Dr H G Koshia added.
