“Governtment of India is considering to set-up a structured regulation for AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) medicines” said Shripad Yesso Naik , Minister of State for AYUSH. In 2003, the Department of Indian System of Medicine and Homeopathy (ISM&H) was renamed to Department of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH). Presently, there are no formalized rules for AYUSH medicine regulations while the registration of medical devices in India is handled by the Central Drug Standards and Control Organization. (Documents required for CDSCO registration in India, Step by Step Process to Register Your Medical Device in India).
The AYUSH department is focusing on education and research in the field of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH). It is an independent ministry effective November, 2014. “Government has initiated procedural steps for setting up the vertical structure for AYUSH in the Central Drug Standards and Control Organization (CDSCO) and the need for creation of a separate drug Controller General for AYUSH may be assessed subsequently, the time frame for which cannot be specified at this stage” Shripad Yesso Naik added.
