New Delhi, February 24, 2025: The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has updated the Medical Device Battery Waste Management Amendments with the 2025 amendments. The 2025 amendments remove some packaging requirements, require QR code tracking for batteries, mandate quarterly EPR compliance updates by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), and relax cadmium and lead marking requirements for low concentrations.
Key Amendments in Battery Waste Rules, 2025
- Packaging Exemption: The packaging rules do not apply to products covered under Rule 26 of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, which includes small quantities (10g or 10 ml or less), fast food items, agricultural products over 50kg, and goods regulated by other laws.
- QR Code/Barcode: Manufacturers and importers must place a barcode or QR code on batteries, equipment, and packaging with the EPR registration number. It must also appear in the product brochure to comply with Amendments to Medical Device Battery Rules.
- EPR Compliance List: CPCB will maintain and update a quarterly list of EPR Compliance for Batteries registered producers on its online portal.
- Chemical Symbol Marking: The Cd (Cadmium) and Pb (Lead) symbols are not required if Cadmium is ≤ 0.002% (20 ppm) and Lead is ≤ 0.004% (40 ppm).
Conclusion
The amendments improve compliance flexibility while ensuring environmental safety. QR codes/barcodes enhance traceability, and CPCB’s quarterly updates strengthen the transparency of CPCB Battery Regulations. These updates are crucial for promoting Battery Recycling and Sustainability by ensuring better tracking and disposal of batteries. The Medical Device Battery Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2025, simplify compliance, improve traceability, and strengthen regulatory control.
